Back In The Nish

Well I got through it all somehow. In hindsight, the exam period is always a journey of self-discovery. Not in any cheezy sense, but in terms of discovering that you actually can buckle down if you really have to. Another thing that always happens during exams is the promise you make to yourself to “work harder next term” so that you won’t end up in the same situation. I make this promise every semester and am still trying to figure out how to actually keep it. I guess that’s something I’ll figure out when I get back…

For now though, it’s really hard (and lame I might add) to be thinking about school when I’m back at home. One of the only good things about university exams is that they’re done before the holidays so that when you go home you can focus on holiday cheer without study stress looming in the back of your mind. Needless to say, the holidays mean different things for different people but I think that seeing family and old friends is something we all look forward to.

Home for me is Antigonish, Nova Scotia, the midway point between Halifax and Cape Breton Island and home to St. Francis Xavier University. My parents moved here after I graduated high school so it’s still a very new place to me. Nevertheless, I have found it to be a very welcoming community and I have made very close friends in the relatively short time I’ve been here. Everybody has a whole bunch of things to do and people to see over the coming weeks but I thought I’d write about a few of the things that will be keeping me busy:

  • Photography: With academic responsibilities flooding my brain over the last few weeks I’ve really struggled to get out and produce any work I’ve been happy with. That is something I’m hoping to change while I’m at home. My parents have a 175 acre property so I’m not worried about a shortage of inspiration (Look for updates over the coming weeks).
  • Script Work: As I mentioned, my position as assistant director for Pride and Prejudice comes with a good deal of research and text work which I’m sure could fill up the whole holiday if I let it. While I have no intention of burying my nose in books for the next 3 weeks, I’m still really keen to do the work that such an undertaking demands.
  • Festivities: This, I realize, is a fairly general term. Basically what I mean is that I’m going to make the most of my time here with friends I don’t get to see nearly enough. I’m sure we will come up with many ways to keep the winter chill at bay (and hopefully not get into too much trouble).

Those are just a few of the things I’m getting up to, expect updates on that and more in the days to come.

Cheers!

Ya Heard!?

Right now I’m listening to Gnarls Barkley’s second album The Odd Couple. This one has been on the racks for a little while but these guys are some of the most creative collaborators out there right now and both are real winners in my books.
