Excited for Locks of Love!!!

Hey BU,

Similarly to Jess I am also doing Locks for love 🙂

I made a decision in my 4th year that I wanted to donate my hair. Why? Long story. But suffice to say that I know that this is a great cause and that I feel for those who have to go through Chemo or have diseases that prevent proper hair growth. But in my 4th year my hair wasn’t quiet long enough to donate. I didn’t want to donate what I had if it wouldn’t be put towards a wig, plus I was traveling to Australia and didn’t want to get a perma-sunburn.

So here I am. In 1 day (less than 24 hours) I will be shaving my head.

All 15 inches (or so).

Me being slightly melodramatic about cutting my hair.... ok VERY melodramatic.

Me being slightly melodramatic about cutting my hair…. ok VERY melodramatic.

Don’t get me wrong, I am really excited about it, but there is always something frightening about change. And i will never have hair this short… so I have no idea if it will even suit me. But I am extremely happy I’m doing it. The experience alone would be worth it, coupled with that I get to make a difference in a child’s life.

The hair, and money that I and several other BU students raise, is going to Locks of Love,  a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most wigs sold by retailers are made to fit adult heads, and are much too big for children to wear and often require the use of tape or glue to keep them from falling off. The hair prosthetics Locks of Love provides are custom-made from donated ponytails for each child’s head. They retail between $3,500 to $6,000. The hairpiece forms a vacuum seal and does not require the use of tape or glue. The children can easily swim, and shower with out worrying about the wig falling off!

These 8 or so Bishop’s students are donating their time, money and hair for this project and helping to find donations  to help to finance the wigs. My personal goal is that overall, BU students can raise $500 dollars in addition to all the hair we will be donating. This is where you can help, with your generous donations!

We will be setting up a table in the SUB Lobby  all Thursday collecting donations and at the table is also a raffle!!

The “big cut” will be at 5 -7 pm this Thursday (the 7th) in the SUB Lobby. I would love to see tons of people there to support this amazing cause!! If you are willing to share a story in the comments or want any more information please contact me at lharrison08@ubishops.ca  or join the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/events/474803975914601/ ) and come out and support!!!

Cheers BU,
