Proud Gaiter Nick Poloniato will join Team Canada at the Olympics!
When one door closes, another one opens. This could not be truer for #UBishopsAlumni Nick Poloniato ’11 who will represent Canada during the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.
As a former member of the Gaiters football team and two-time Conference All-Star as a defensive back, Nick’s dream was to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). However, when he suffered a serious injury that put him out of sports for a year, that dream seemed to slip away. There was, however, a silver lining to his injury, as he was then introduced to bobsledding .
Nick has been sledding for five and a half years now with the main goal of qualifying for and winning a medal at the 2018 Olympics. He has been racing on the World Cup Circuit for the past two and half years, climbing the ranks as a pilot.
Fast forward to today, Nick has realized his goal of qualifying for the Olympics in both 2 and 4- man events and will take on his next goal of winning a medal in PyeongChang in just over a week’s time!
Competing in bobsleigh has been the most exhilarating experience Nick has had in sports. “The way your heart pounds every time you step to the line, the nervous energy you feel, it is amazing!” Nick explained. He has learnt how to channel this energy into a positive focus and explosive power at the start of the track.
Bobsledding has also taught Nick how to become extremely resilient.
“I have had many situations where I have wanted to give up, where I have crashed and been hurt both mentally and physically but I kept getting up, and getting back in the sled […] I realized there was a bigger picture and everyone always has struggles in sport, sometimes they can be both physically and mentally draining. Never give up on your dreams because on the other side of struggle there can be success.” said Nick
Bishop’s University wishes Nick all the best as he heads to PyeongChang to represent his country and alma mater at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. #BleedPurple!
