Getting to know Bishop’s – Meet Martin Rourke

Getting to know your #Ubishops community is a must if you wish to fully immerse yourself into the BUbble! We decided to help you out by conducting monthly interviews with staff and faculty that contribute to the school’s success. This month we had the opportunity to talk to Martin Rourke, Sports Information Coordinator and Golf Coach for the Bishop’s Gaiters.

Favourite book of all-time?
Who’s Your Caddie – Rick Reilly

Favourite group or singer?
I listen to a lot and am not fussy. But Will Smith was definitely my favourite artist growing up.

Favourite movie of all-time?
My TV is always on TSN/Sportsnet or the Golf Channel, but if I had to pick movies, I’d go with Space Jam or Ocean’s Eleven.

Favourite spot on campus?
Coulter Field Press Box, my second office, which has an amazing view!

Favourite spot off-campus?
Any golf course (we are so lucky to have quality and affordability in the Eastern Townships!) or curling club.

Favourite #Ubishops moment?
I have two. The 2015 RSEQ men’s basketball championship game in Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters won in front of a raucous crowd and, even though it was March Break, students came back to be a part of the excitement. The week after at Nationals with a crazy alumni base in Toronto was also really fun. The second was when our golf team qualified for Nationals for the first time ever in 2017. We have since qualified again in 2018!

Describe #Ubishops in three words.
Incomparable, paradise, family

If you had to switch jobs with someone on campus, what would it be and why?
If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. I work in sports, tough to top that for a sports nut… so my boss I guess!

A dedicated golf coach at work!

If you had to join a club or student group on campus, what would it be and why?
I have had the fortune of sitting in on Purple Letter Award nominations and have learned so much about all the wonderful clubs, groups and extra curricular’s on campus and it really is impressive. I can’t choose just one.

If you had to go back to school, which program would you pick and why?
Sports Studies. It was not an option when I was exploring universities, everything worked out great for me in the end but I do really enjoy getting to work with a number of Sports Studies students each semester.
