Dr. Claire Grogan (English Department) wants your holidays to be filled with joy and laughter. Her choice? Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by Anne-Marie MacDonald. This play will be one of the literary texts for ENG 101 during Winter 2018.

“The play is a rewriting of Shakespeare’s “Othello” and “Romeo and Juliet” in which a modern day female academic protagonist magically finds her self back in the original plays. Her presence (and knowledge of the two tragedies) spins things out of control with hilarious results. Her trip ends up proving her research thesis (which has received short shrift by her male supervisor) that the two tragedies were in fact meant to be comedies!”

Dr. David Webster (History Department) has the perfect book for those who wish to know about #GirlPower even before the Spice Girls sang about it in their songs: The Secret History of Wonder Woman, by Dorothy Lepore.

“Only a few superhero stories delve into history. One of them is Wonder Woman, who leaves her safe island to fight for justice amidst the carnage of world war. Reviled by some and embraced by others, Wonder Woman may be the only comic book character to be named as a United Nations goodwill ambassador. The Wonder Woman comic book, too, has its history, spanning from the 1940s to the most recent movie. Harvard history prof Dorothy Lepore explores the Wonder Woman story with impressive archival research and an accessible style – perfect reading to leave under the tree.”

Dr. Patrick McBrine (English Department) went for a sure shot for the book lover in your life.  The Buried Giant by Nobel Prize winner Kazoo Ishiguro is a must.”This book offers a compelling and humane account of life in the early Middle Ages. So much of this period is “dark,” and so to find a book with both light and feeling … well, it’s worth reading and more so for the author’s great skill. I recommend it!”
