How to Rock Your Finals!

Finals season at Bishop’s University is fast approaching! Have you started studying? Are you worried about your exams? Do not fear! We’re here to help! We want to share with you the best tips to rock your finals, a combination of healthy habits and smart task making. You can do it! We are cheering you on!


Sleep, sleep, sleep!
Gaiters! It is important to get your beauty rest! It can be tempting to pull an all-nighter to finish an assignment or review notes, but this can actually make things worse. The lack of proper sleep means you will feel much more tired the day of your exam and you will not have retained as much information than if you got a good night’s sleep. Instead, go to bed earlier and wake up earlier the next day. A lack of sleep can also have negative impacts on your physical and mental health. Having trouble falling asleep? Put some lavender spray on your pillow. The scent will relax your body and encourage sleep.

Take breaks
Sometimes it can be easy to get absorbed in our study material and forget to step away for a little bit of time. It is important to focus on our studying, but it is as equally important to take a step back and take a break. Taking breaks can decrease amounts of anxiety, as it allows you steam off some of that stress. Finding a balance is key. If you study for 30 minutes, take a 10-minute break. Go grab a coffee at Tim’s, walk around Bishop’s beautiful campus, or read your favourite book on the gazebo. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you take a break every now and then.

Use the library and other resources
Having trouble understanding a certain topic? Want to be extra-prepared for your exam? Visit the Library Learning Commons where a plethora of resources and services are available to you! With an array of desks, chairs, and sofas, you are sure to find a comfortable nook for completing your work.

Eat regular meals
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it doesn’t mean you should skip all the others! Whether you have a meal plan at Dewhurst Dining Hall or you live off-campus, make sure you eat at regular times. Avoid eating an abundant amount of junk food as well; a little bit of junk food is okay, but eating too much can make you feel sick, which affects your studying time, which affects your exam taking.

Prepare tasks in advance
Making a schedule of assignment due dates, exam times, and other deadlines can help you visualize what you need to do and encourage you to do them. You can make a task-list, or organize a complete calendar. Keep in mind how you work and what scheduling method will be more effective for you. Do whatever works for you!
