Letter to My High School Self

University is a big change. From new friends to a new environment, it can be a bit scary. #Ubishops English Literature and Environmental Studies student Brianna Henshaw wrote a letter to her high school self and all incoming Gaiters to make this change easier.

University is a big change—you’re moving across the country (or even to a new country!), starting over with new friends and harder classes—but it’s also the start of something new, so leave your fears at the door and focus on having fun.

Don’t worry about not being able to make friends, it’s way easier than you think. Everyone is in the same boat when they arrive, and everyone is looking for friends. Your frosh team, your classmates, clubs and roommates, these people are going to easily become your best friends. So get involved in as many things as you can. Not only will you meet more people, but you’ll have fun doing it, whether it’s academics, sports, or just for fun.

Everything on campus is super close, and Lennoxville is only a short walk for groceries, coffee, or a bite to eat. There’s Dewies (where you’ll quickly spend most of your time), the Plex, the SUB, and the library, not to mention all your friends live within a five minute walk.

Make sure to get out of your comfort zone. Push yourself to speak up in class, to volunteer on that committee, to join that club even though you don’t know anyone in it. Go to events and just enjoy the BU spirit. But don’t forget to take care of yourself. Don’t be afraid to say no and check in with yourself every once in a while. If something is wrong, go talk to someone. There are so many amazing services on campus that are there specifically for you, so take advantage of them.

Don’t worry about not fitting in or not knowing enough. That’s what these next few years are all about! Professors want to help you, school services are there to support you, and the friends you make here will stand behind you 100 percent. You’ll never want to leave, and you’ll be counting down the days until you get back!

Study hard, but don’t forget, university is an experience, so make the most of your years here. Bishop’s has such a unique atmosphere. The small classes and intense community feeling are such a perfect fit, it’s going to be hard to imagine yourself at any other school. You’re going to find yourself here. And even though some days will be tough, just remember that you’re going to come out the stronger for it. So raise a toast to your new home.

You’re going to love it here!
