Working the Summer Away

Working the Summer Away

Hello there Bishop’s community! Erica here, giving you an update on my life post-first year! I have been home for just over one month and let me tell you, it is definitely an adjustment going from living alone to moving back in with the family (especially with one as large and as loud as mine!) Nonetheless, I am happy to be home and to be spending some time with them before I head up to a summer camp for the summer months and then back to school in September.

So before I left school, I became a part of an outreach program to try to spread word of Bishop’s around my community so within the first few days of being home I went to my old high school and the local catholic high school to give the guidance departments some Bishop’s resources. It was nice to see some old faces there but after having such a great first year, I do not miss high school one bit! However, hopefully with my strategic placing of Bishop’s viewbooks around Ancaster more people will choose to make the trek out to Lennoxville and check out our campus.

Besides that, I have been working 5 days a week with a small landscaping company. You should know that prior to the past month, I had never done any yard work whatsoever so this has been a huge learning experience for me but I am having a great time. I start work at 7:30 every morning and finish anywhere between 4 and 6 and I come home hungry and exhausted at the end of every day. However, despite the hard work, I have so far learned how to mow a lawn, how to weed whack, how to prune a hedge, how to dethatch and top dress a lawn, and how to cut and roll sod! Impressive, huh? I also spend a lot of time crawling around in the dirt (and I am paid to do it!). But I am certainly getting stronger and am getting a very nice farmer’s tan so there are definitely some perks to this job. At the end of June, I am heading up to a summer camp at which I will work as a counselor for 2 months. It is my second year working there but my twelfth summer that I will spend there. My brother and sister will be there for part of the summer too!

Outside of work, I have been keeping busy, trying to fit in seeing as many of my home friends as possible. I have been to my cottage, a fashion show, a golf tournament, a 19th birthday party and to see the Wizard of Oz in downtown Toronto. The summer break is flying by and before too long, it will be time to pick courses and prep to move back to school. I will be living in a house with 4 of my friends so I have been trying to look for furniture while I have been back home – I will let you know how my search goes later on in the summer. That’s all from me for now, Gaiters! Hope you are all enjoying the summer sunshine!

Erica 🙂
