Experiential Learning Placement – Emery Psychology Clinic

Hello, my name is Daphné. I graduated with an Honours bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bishop’s University, where I am now pursuing a master’s in individualized studies. I recently completed my Experiential Learning placement at Emery Psychology.

Over the summer, I actively contributed to the clinic’s operations and client services. I collaborated closely with my supervisors, Dr. Ann Emery and Courtney Prieur, as well as the clinic team. Assisting with assessments, and progressively working toward independently administering tests. I also supported clinic projects, including creating a newsletter, managing budgeting and furniture purchases, and brainstorming ways to enhance the client experience. In psychology, I have always found it challenging to gain meaningful real-world experience. Opportunities are often limited or unpaid with only a bachelor’s degree. This Experiential Learning placement was the perfect opportunity for me to bridge that gap. My main motivation was to develop hands-on experience in a professional setting. With the goal of strengthening my preparation for future doctoral studies in psychology.

One highlight of my experience was participating in the “lunch and learns” organized by Courtney at the office. During one session, we had the opportunity to ask the team questions about their career paths. As well as what they enjoy and find challenging in the field. This conversation reassured me that there is no single clear path to achieving your goals, which was both inspiring and motivating for my own journey.

At the beginning of this experience, I was worried about experiencing imposter syndrome, as I was surrounded by such knowledgeable and skilled professionals. However, the team consistently reassured me and made me feel that my perspective was valued. For instance, after assessments, Dr. Ann would ask for my opinion on the child and genuinely consider my observations. This not only boosted my confidence but also taught me the importance of trusting my own judgment and contributions. This placement allowed me to see the direct connection between what I had studied in the classroom and its application in real life. Concepts I learned in psychology courses, such as developmental theories, assessment methods, and clinical interviewing, came to life as I assisted with assessments and observed client interactions.

I would like to thank Bassam for encouraging me and guiding me toward this work placement. He was always by my side whenever I had questions or doubts and even joined us for dinner at the office to get to know the team, which meant a lot to me. I am leaving this experience feeling deeply grateful and with a much clearer sense of the path I want to pursue. I am especially thankful to Courtney Prieur and Dr. Ann Emery, two incredible mentors whom I truly aspire to emulate one day. Their support, guidance, and encouragement made this journey both inspiring and transformative. My work placement at Emery Psychology has given me greater confidence in my abilities and a clearer vision of my future path. With continued application of my skills and ongoing engagement with clients and colleagues, I feel well-prepared for future academic and professional opportunities.
