Bishop’s shines at National Model UN simulation

Curious about the National Model UN simulation coming up soon? Read about Mikael’s experience from last year!

The Bishop’s delegation received the highest honours, the Outstanding Delegation Award, at the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City. The award recognizes delegations for active engagement in committees, professionalism and diplomatic values, and proper use of NMUN rules and procedures.

NMUN is the most prestigious Model United Nations simulation in the world. The 2024 conferences witnessed the involvement of more than 7,000 student delegates hailing from 430 colleges and universities, spanning 130 diverse United Nations (UN) member states. During this conference, student delegations assume the role of a country in a simulated UN session spanning five days. This year, our delegation represented the Republic of Poland.

Participating in NMUN: “untangible to tangible”

It was a life-changing experience that showed me how diplomacy is an area I really want to work in. We’ve been working towards NMUN all year, as we are enrolled in Bishop’s UN Practicum, a year-long course that immerses us in the comprehensive study of the UN system. Through a series of seminars, in-class activities, and simulations with the Université de Sherbrooke, we acquired a profound understanding of the UN system and diplomatic behaviour.

Participating in NMUN allowed me to truly realize how much I have learned since September by practicing and preparing for this simulation. It was surprising to see the sheer size of the conference, the diversity of students, and how NMUN went from something “untangible to tangible”. I learned how to command a room and “sell myself” – wowing people in the 40 seconds I’m given is a huge feat.

The conference demands meticulous preparation, including the in-depth study of specialized agencies, writing of position papers, and shrewd negotiation skills. During this conference, we engaged in an 80-hour simulation where we ultimately produced a written document outlining solutions to pressing global issues. Some of the topics in the committees this year included the promotion of sustainable tourism, promoting and protecting the rights of children in conflict, and social inclusion of the elderly.

Building skills for the future

If I were to do it differently, I would focus even more on developing my public speaking, analytical thinking, writing, negotiation, and teamwork skills. These practical skills are essential for success in the simulation and for my future career in diplomacy.

Overall, the NMUN experience has been tremendously rewarding and has helped me grow as a student, a professional, and a person. I have gained a deeper understanding of the UN system, honed my diplomatic skills, and developed a stronger passion for international affairs. This experience has undoubtedly shaped my future aspirations and will continue to guide me as I navigate the world of diplomacy.

An interdisciplinary approach for international cooperation

In addition, participating in NMUN has given me valuable cross-disciplinary experience. Over 250 Bishop’s students have participated in the Model UN practicum over the years, studying various disciplines like politics, international studies, history, physics, business, and education. This diverse, interdisciplinary approach has further enriched my understanding of global issues and the complexities of international cooperation.

NMUN in one word: grateful

The recognition our delegation has received, including multiple delegation awards, awards for our position papers, and individual committee awards, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. However, we are trained to focus on best representing our country and working diplomatically, rather than solely on winning awards.

As I look back on this experience, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The NMUN conference has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, think critically about global issues, and hone my diplomatic skills. It has been an invaluable opportunity to put my studies into practice and gain hands-on experience in the world of international relations.

I am grateful for the guidance and support of our professor, Sarah-Myriam Martin-Brûlé, who has been instrumental in our preparation and success. Her dedication to the UN Practicum course and her mentorship have been crucial in shaping my understanding of the UN and my passion for diplomacy.

Looking ahead, I am excited to take the lessons and skills I’ve learned from NMUN and apply them to my future pursuits, whether it’s in graduate studies, a career in international organizations, or beyond. This experience has truly been a transformative one, and I know it will continue to shape my personal and professional growth for years to come.
