Finding the balance
Being a student at Bishop’s University (B.U.) is about more than just academics; it is also about the experience where the education offered focuses on the whole person. Basically, the school’s goal is to create free-thinking individuals through the development of broad general knowledge. Which means that it focuses on balancing the academic and personal aspects that are important to grow as people.
Personalized program
One of the most rewarding aspects of studying at B.U. is the ability to tailor your education to your enjoyment. During my academic journey, I have been able to pursue and discover new and different interests, like taking a class on hope or one in linguistics.
Being an English literature student at Bishop’s, I have also decided to do a minor in teaching English as a second language with the goal of doing a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language after my BA. This combination has allowed me to create an educational path that feels like it is uniquely mine.
Personalized electives
Another way to make semesters feel more personalized is through the different electives that I have had the chance to take. Taking courses outside my major and minor has given me access to subjects and classes that I normally would not have been able to take. I have taken electives in history, communications, other languages and biology. They have allowed me to better understand some of my other classes, as they allow me to gain a better understanding of the world.
Some of my favourite classes that I have taken in university have been these electives, probably because they are a great way to explore different subjects and broaden your horizons, sometimes in ways that are unexpectedly useful in other classes. I remember how certain elements from my history class related to other elements from my communication class; it made it easier to understand. Plus, they make for great conversation starters at family gatherings!
Life beyond the classrooms

Bishop’s University offers plenty of opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities and develop interests outside of academics.
As someone who enjoys many hobbies, especially outdoor activities, I was able to join the outdoors club, as well as the rowing club. These have been a great way to connect with like-minded people. I’m even considering joining another club soon, maybe an arts and crafts one, like the knit community!
Of course, there are numerous ways to get involved on campus, I found that there are many interesting jobs, committees, or councils that can appeal to many different students. This all contributes to creating a vibrant and welcoming campus that makes for a great place to spend your time and grow.
Sense of community
Looking back on my time at Bishop’s, I feel grateful for the personalized and meaningful education I’ve received. The strong personal connections within the school create a tight-knit community where every opportunity to grow and learn feels impactful.
Bishop’s is not a big school, but for what it lacks in size, it makes up for in its sense of community.
Feeling like yourself
Since Bishop’s University is a place where the students are encouraged to develop their different talents and realize their leadership potential, the school takes the means necessary to help us achieve just that. So, by focusing on developing the whole person, the students are also treated as people and not just numbers.
Bishop’s University is more than just a place to earn a degree; it’s a place where students can explore their passions, form lifelong friendships, and develop into well-rounded individuals. If you are looking for an education that values both academic excellence and personal growth, B.U. is definitely an incredible place to be.
