I am currently in my third year at Bishop’s University, where I play on the men’s rugby team. I chose Bishop’s primarily for its strong athletics program, and I’d like to share how it has positively impacted my experience. One of the standout features of being a varsity athlete here is the academic support available through the athletics community. We have dedicated access to an academic advisor who is a former player on the men’s basketball team. He runs a study hall for all athletes, offering assistance and insights into our coursework.
This support includes help with class selection, study strategies, exam preparation, and much more. Personally, this has been helpful in ensuring that I complete my assignments thoroughly and submit high-quality work, which has greatly improved my grades. The study hall is available Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM, and I often find myself utilizing this resource before or after team events like workouts and practices. It’s a fantastic way to balance my academic responsibilities with my athletic commitments.

Sports Facilities Elevating the Athlete Experience
Bishop’s University has the nicest athletics facilities I have seen, our sports plex is only a few years old. Our facilities include two gyms, three weight rooms with an athletes-only space, and a new pool for training and recovery. We also have a hockey rink which adds to our diverse athletic offerings. The facility includes well-equipped locker rooms and changing areas, ensuring a comfortable experience for all athletes.
High-quality equipment improves training, and community areas give athletes room to unwind together. Additionally, regular maintenance keeps the facilities in top condition, providing a clean and safe environment for everyone. The combination of exceptional amenities and a commitment to athlete care makes Bishop’s a standout university for sports and fitness. We are also very grateful for our full laundry services. This ensures our practice and game clothing are cleaned every day.

Unlocking My Potential On and Off the Field
The quality of coaching at Bishop’s University was a major factor in my decision to join the rugby team. I’ve never encountered any issues or disagreements with my coaches here; they are incredibly supportive and genuinely invested in our success. I haven’t trained with other teams, but I consistently hear great things about their coaches. Thanks to my coaches at Bishop’s, I’ve been able to develop my skills and reach my full potential, not just as a player, but also as a member of the Bishop’s athletics community.
I’ve already travelled to amazing places like New York City, Pau in France, and West Point — all in just two seasons. This year, our coaching staff plans to take us back to New York City and on a team tour to Martinique. All of these experiences are made possible by our dedicated coaching staff, who invest countless hours to enhance both our performance and enjoyment of the sport. Their commitment truly sets Bishop’s apart and has greatly improved my time here.

The Welcoming Rugby Community at Bishop’s
The community I’ve become a part of at Bishop’s is truly remarkable. Through rugby, I’ve formed lifelong friendships with both current and former teammates. When I arrived as a first-year student, I faced a lot of uncertainty; I had never met anyone on the team before. However, that quickly changed. The older players were incredibly welcoming and kind to me and the other newcomers. They took us on tours of the campus and Lennoxville, invited us to their homes for meals, and included us in workouts, ensuring that everyone felt included, regardless of skill level. They demonstrated the strength of our team culture and community, which made a lasting impression on me. Now that the older players are graduating, my teammates and I are responsible for keeping that welcoming culture alive. Maintaining this close community is very important to me, and I’m committed to ensuring that every new player feels just as supported and included as I once did.
Essential Health Services at Bishop’s
Health services at Bishop’s are essential, particularly for the student-athlete community, including myself. Rugby is tough on the body, so our doctors and trainers have a big job supporting us. They manage not just men’s rugby but also football, lacrosse, women’s rugby, women’s soccer, and women’s hockey, all at the same time. Fortunately, we have an exceptional team of doctors and trainers dedicated to our care, supporting over a hundred athletes daily. They provide a range of services, including treatments, taping, ice baths, heat therapy, massages, physiotherapy, and recovery and strengthening exercises. Their expertise has enabled me to recover quickly and effectively from various injuries, allowing me to continue playing the sport I love to the fullest.
