Finding My Way on the Trails at Bishop’s

When I first arrived at Bishops University from France for my first semester, I had no idea that the next chapter of my life would involve so much time spent outdoors.

It all started with a simple decision to join the running club. I figured it would be a good way to stay fit and meet new people. Little did I know, this decision would open up a whole new world of exploration and adventure, teaching me not only about the best trails around the school but also igniting a love for hiking and cycling in the woods.

The Beginning: A Run Through the Trails

At first, it was all about the runs. The running club took me on some of the most scenic routes through the woods surrounding the campus. I was immediately struck by how beautiful and diverse the forests were, especially in the autumn months when the trees were full of colors I didn’t usually pay attention to back home.

But as I started to run these trails more frequently, I realized that I wasn’t just running, I was falling in love with the experience of being out there, surrounded by nature.

A New Love for Hiking and Cycling

Over time, my love for the trails grew. I began to experiment with hiking and cycling as second hand bicycles are cheap if you know how to haggle. That’s when I truly discovered the magic of the woods. Bishops’ campus is perfectly situated for outdoor activities, with its vast network of trails winding through forests, over hills, and around lakes.

No matter the season, there’s always something new to see and explore.

In the winter, the snow-covered trails offer a peaceful solitude that makes you feel like you’re walking through a completely different world.

Spring brings a burst of green, with wildflowers and fresh leaves on the trees, while back end of summer offers the perfect weather for long, leisurely bike rides through the shaded woods.

And of course, fall is when the campus truly comes alive with stunning colors and crisp air, making it the perfect time for a hike or a run.

Addicted to Trails

At this point, it’s safe to say I’ve become addicted to the trails. I find myself constantly seeking new routes to explore, whether on foot or by bike. The thrill of discovering a hidden path or a new viewpoint never gets old, and each season brings fresh surprises.

I often try to drag my friends along with me, urging them to join me for hikes or bike rides, but most of the time, I end up exploring solo, immersing myself in the peaceful tranquility of the forest.

One of the things I love most about these trails is how they’re always changing. No two seasons are alike, and the landscape transforms in the most beautiful ways. It’s impossible not to appreciate the beauty around you, whether it’s the way the morning fog hovers over the trail in the spring or the way the autumn leaves crunch beneath your feet.

So far my favourite trail experience was during the winter when I was convinced I heard bigfoot roaming the woods. I was with a friend one night on the trail between the campus and the farm, and we heard shuffling in the nearby shrubs. Granted nocturnal animals exist, but because most of these animals also hibernate, it raised many questions that remained unanswered to this day.

Who knows if Bigfoot is actually just in Lennoxville?
