Feeling confused about where to go for university? I totally get it! Coming from a big city like Montreal, most of my friends went to one of the large universities nearby. While those schools are great, being in a smaller, close-knit environment was my dream undergrad experience. That realization led me to Bishop’s University—a choice I will never regret!
Bishop’s Sees You, Not Just Your Student ID
After graduating Cégep, I took a gap year to avoid starting my degree online and think about what I wanted to study. Taking a break gave me the chance to think about what I needed to have a fulfilling university journey.
What I loved most about high school and Cégep was being in small classes with professors who knew my name, goals and cared about my success. When I researched the larger Montreal universities, I worried they would see me as a number instead of an individual. Imagining myself taking a class in a massive lecture hall felt horrifying to me!

One day, while surfing the internet for universities in Quebec, I landed on Bishop’s website. As a big-city girl, I never thought about moving away. But Bishop’s managed to impress me with its small classes and strong-knit community. After scrolling through the website, I decided to book a campus tour. Visiting Bishop’s with my mom, I instantly fell in love with the place. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. I was ready to embrace purple for the next three years of my life!
So, my mom dropped me off in residence and I started my university journey as a Marketing major. While I felt a little nervous about leaving home, campus events like homecoming and the amazing people at Bishop’s reassured me that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
Why Moving from a Big City to a Small Town for University is Worth It
A Slower Pace of Life
Montreal is a chaotic big city – there’s something always happening. Going to Bishop’s allowed me to have a slower pace of life surrounded by nature and fresh air. It gave me the space to focus on my studies and well-being without the constant distractions of city life. Bishop’s is the best place for you to slow down.
A Strong Sense of Community
My friends at larger universities have told me that making meaningful connections is challenging. It’s pretty hard to meet people with so many students around. But since Bishop’s is small, building a close-knit community of my own took less effort. From day one, I was surrounded by familiar faces, whether in residence, on-campus events, classes or even while doing my groceries at the local Maxi. I am grateful for the people I met at Bishop’s, and I’m sure you’ll be able to find a community of your own here.
Bishop’s Limitless Opportunities
Coming to Bishop’s, I had the chance to find two internships on campus, participated in a case competition and served on the executive team of the Bishop’s University Honors Society. The community gave me opportunities that I didn’t think I would have gotten somewhere else.
Take a Leap of Faith – Come to Bishop’s
I will forever be grateful for my time at Bishop’s. I’ve made lifelong friendships with people from around the world and had the chance to create personal bonds with my professors. If you also come from a big city, I hope I convinced you to take a chance and go to a smaller university. Bishop’s is a hidden gem in the small town of Lennoxville—and it might just be the perfect place for you, too!
