Choosing the Right University: A Tough but Exciting Decision
Finding the best university for your higher education can be a challenging process. Two years ago, I dove into the search for the perfect university, unsure where I’d land. That’s why I grabbed every university brochure available at my CEGEP. Even in my first year of a two-year program, I knew time would fly—so I got a head start and began preparing early.
Step 1: Research Programs That Spark Your Interest
I started by diving into each university’s programs and jotting down the ones that sparked my interest. Personally, I was interested in Sports Administration, Communication, and International Studies.
I recommend making a list of potential programs that align with your own passions and career goals. This will help you narrow down your choices.
Step 2: Explore the University’s Website
Once you have an idea of the programs you’re interested in, take time to visit each university’s website. This is where you’ll find essential details about your chosen field of study and gain insight into the institution’s values and mission.
I honestly lost count of the hours I spent browsing ubishops.ca—but I know they were worthwhile! Everything you need to know is available online, from admission requirements to what campus life looks like.
Step 3: Consider Extracurricular Activities and Campus Life
Beyond academics, university is about experience! That’s why it’s worth exploring extracurriculars like varsity and recreational sports, along with student clubs.
Pro Tip: Instagram is the best resource for this step. Most varsity teams and student clubs have active social media accounts where they share updates, events, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of campus life. The first accounts I followed were @gaiterswrg, and @ubishops_sports_studies, they gave me a taste of what uni life coulave me a glimpse of what bishop’s community looked like.

Step 4: Visualize Yourself at the University
One of the most impactful things I did was visualization. Close your eyes and picture yourself on campus—walking through the Quad, attending classes in Bishop Williams Hall, studying at the library, hanging out at the Purple Pod, and showing your purple pride at a game on Coulter Field. How does it make you feel?
For me, imagining life at Bishop’s gave me a sense of excitement and belonging, which confirmed my decision. I had this indescribable feeling that it was the right place to continue my journey of life. Febrility running through my veins are the closest explanation I could give you to picture the feeling!

Why Bishop’s University Was the Perfect Choice for Me
Bishop’s had everything I was looking for! Even though I’m only in my first year, I already feel at home here. I’m pursuing a major in Sport Studies and exploring the possibility of completing a minor in Communication. One thing I love about BU is the liberal education model that allows me to broaden my center of interest with the classes I’m taking!
As a francophone, I wanted to improve my English skills. Bishop’s made the transition go incredibly smoothly; accommodations are available for French-speaking students like redaction of projects in French and there are endless opportunities to improve your language skills in a welcoming environment. I immediately felt less pressured to understand and speak ‘perfect English’ once I learned most of my profs were bilingual our understood French. There truly are no worries to have!
On top of all that, I was fortunate enough to be offered a spot on Bishop’s varsity rugby team. Ultimately, representing the Gaiters played a big role in my final decision—and I haven’t looked back since! I had the chance to play the sport I love with new teammates that are now a second family for me. I am having a blast and love repping purple as a student-athlete!

Be You at BU
As cliché as it may sound, the phrase “Be you at BU” truly stuck with me, and I can confidently say; they weren’t lying! Bishop’s University is a place where you can truly be yourself, grow academically and personally and be part of a supportive and close-knit community.
So, if you’re in the middle of your university search, take your time, follow these steps, and most importantly, trust your instincts. You’ll find the right place for you—just like I by choosing Bishop’s University!
