How My University Experience is Shaping Me into a Better Person

When I started university, I wasn’t just looking to get a degree—I wanted an experience that would challenge me, push me out of my comfort zone, and help me figure out who I really am. What I didn’t realize was how much the environment itself would shape me, not just as a student, but as a person.

The Impact of a Small School

Bishop’s is a small, tight-knit school that focuses on community, personal connections, and hands-on learning. Its mission is all about empowering you to reach your full potential, and over the years, I’ve realized how much that has impacted me. It’s not just about what I’ve learned in the classroom, but what I have learned about myself as a person, about my own confidence and potential, and the relationships I have built here.

A Learning Environment That Pushes You to Think Bigger

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed about being in a school like this is that learning doesn’t just feel like memorizing theories and writing papers. I’m majoring in Psychology with a Business minor. At Bishop’s, this interdisciplinary path aligns with my interests and career goals.

A Mixed Education

So, I get to study human behavior in my Psych classes, then switch over to Business courses where I learn how to lead and innovate. These fields may seem different, but I’ve found unexpected connections between them, like understanding human behaviour in consumer decision-making. That ability to think beyond just one discipline has made me a more well-rounded, adaptable person.

The Power of Meaningful Connections

Another thing that’s shaped me is the relationships I’ve built here. At bigger schools, it’s easy to feel like just another face in a massive lecture hall. Here, I know my professors, and they know me.

Each semester, different faculties host wine and cheese events where students and professors can hang out and talk. Not only about assignments or grades, but about ideas, future plans, and life in general. It’s in those moments that I’ve realized how important it is to have mentors who genuinely care about your growth.

Community Events That Bring People Together

On top of that, the principal hosts dinners and 5 à 7 gatherings where students from all programs can come together. I’ve met people I wouldn’t have crossed paths with, and those conversations have broadened my perspective. It’s helped me become more comfortable putting myself out there, engaging with people, and building relationships that matter.

Learning to Lead and Take Initiative

Before university, I wouldn’t have called myself a leader. But something about being in an environment like this, where students are encouraged to take initiative, has changed that.

There are tons of academic clubs to join, and if there isn’t one that fits what you’re looking for, you can just start your own. That kind of freedom to create and lead has pushed me in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned how to organize events, manage responsibilities, and collaborate with others—all skills that go way beyond academics.

Growing in Confidence, Inside and Outside the Classroom

Being in a place that values student involvement has made me step up in ways I might not have at a bigger school. I’ve learned to trust myself more, to speak up, and to take on challenges even when they feel intimidating. And that has made me a better person.

Becoming the Best Version of Myself

At the end of the day, my university experience has been about so much more than getting a diploma. The best kind of education isn’t just about learning facts and passing exams. It’s about becoming someone who is curious, capable, and ready to take on whatever comes next. And for me, that’s exactly what this experience has done.
