Studying International Studies at Bishop’s University
My name is Abeda, and I am from Afghanistan. I am currently a second-year student majoring in International Studies with a minor in Politics. I completed my high school education in French before starting my university studies at Bishop’s.
Moving between languages, cultures, and education systems was challenging, but it also shaped who I am today: a curious and motivated student who loves learning and discovering new perspectives.
Finding a Welcoming and Diverse Community
From the very beginning, Bishop’s stood out to me as a truly diverse and welcoming place. Coming from a different background, it mattered a lot to feel accepted and supported, and Bishop’s exceeded my expectations.
The campus community is small, but that is its greatest strength. It allows real connections to form, both inside and outside the classroom.
Learning with Supportive Professors
One of the things I appreciate most about Bishop’s is how approachable and supportive the professors are. They genuinely care about their students’ success.
This supportive environment gave me the confidence to take on new opportunities, including becoming a teaching assistant for a French-language professor.
My Experience as a Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant, I helped prepare teaching materials, assisted students during activities, and corrected exams. This experience was incredibly rewarding and joyful, as it allowed me to give back to the academic community while strengthening my own skills and confidence.
Learning Across Languages and Cultures
Language learning has always been a passion of mine. Being able to speak several languages and study in a multicultural environment like Bishop’s has been deeply fulfilling.
Every day, I am surrounded by people from different backgrounds who each bring their own stories and perspectives. This diversity has enriched my academic experience and broadened my understanding of the world.
My Advice to Newly Admitted Students
My advice to newly admitted students is simple: be curious, be open, and don’t be afraid to take opportunities when they appear.
