Finding my path to Bishop’s
Before coming to Bishop’s University, I had no idea this school even existed. Growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, sports, especially hockey, were a huge part of my life. I started skating at just three years old and played throughout elementary and high school. When the time came to choose between continuing hockey or going to university, I ultimately decided that school was the right path for me. It wasn’t until late July 2022 that I discovered Bishop’s, and just a couple of months later, I arrived on campus. From the start, I could feel the sense of community and camaraderie that makes this place so special.
The excitement of Bishop’s University student life events
One of the best parts of my experience here has been the lively events on campus. Football games are a major highlight, full of energy and school spirit. My first game was Homecoming 2022, and the atmosphere was electric, unlike anything I had experienced before. Attending games with friends is always a great time but knowing some of my friends play on the team makes it even more special. One of my most memorable moments was when Bishop’s won the championship for the first time in a long time in 2025. Seeing my friends celebrate that victory was truly unforgettable.
WinterFest: A true Bishop’s tradition
Another standout event at Bishop’s is WinterFest, which combines everything I love, being outdoors, having fun, and enjoying the company of friends. A major attraction of WinterFest is the Rail Jam, a freestyle skiing and snowboarding competition held right in the middle of campus. Students set up a course with ramps and rails, showcasing their best tricks. My favorite Winterfest memory was last year when my close friend, Max, won the Rail Jam and earned a brand-new pair of skis. Seeing him succeed and celebrating with all our friends was an amazing experience.
Balancing Classes and Sports at Bishop’s University
My daily routine at Bishop’s varies depending on my class schedule. Most days, my classes start between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. and finish by 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. Regardless of my schedule, I try to wake up around 9:00–9:30 a.m. to start my day productively. After classes, I make time for physical activity, whether that’s going to the gym, playing sports, or simply going for a walk. Staying active is important to me, and Bishop’s provides plenty of opportunities to do so.
I’m also heavily involved in LUG Sports, a recreational sports league designed for university students. Unlike traditional intramurals, LUG offers a more competitive yet social experience, making it a great way to stay engaged in sports. I have played LUG hockey since my first year, with 1–2 games per week, usually late at night around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. I have also joined LUG softball teams in the past and will be playing flag football for the first time this spring. These activities have helped me meet new people and maintain a strong connection with friends outside of the classroom.
Living off-campus throughout my time at Bishop’s has taught me responsibility and independence. One major adjustment was learning how to cook for myself while sticking to a budget. While meal planning as a student can be challenging, I have found ways to make affordable, hearty meals. My typical meals include chicken, ground beef, rice, and vegetables. Although it may seem repetitive, I have learned to mix up flavors with different seasonings and ingredients, making each meal enjoyable while keeping costs low.
Why Bishop’s University Student Life Stands Out
Reflecting on my time at Bishop’s, I can confidently say that choosing this university was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The welcoming community, exciting events, and opportunities for personal growth have made my experience truly unforgettable. To anyone considering Bishop’s, my advice is simple, get involved, attend events, and take advantage of everything this amazing university has to offer. The time flies by faster than you’d expect!
