Getting to know Bishop’s: Ryan Smith

Getting to know your #Ubishops community is a must if you wish to fully immerse yourself into the BUbble! We decided to help you out by conducting monthly interviews with staff and faculty that contribute to the school’s success. This month, we had the opportunity to talk to Ryan Smith, Aquatics and Camps Coordinator for the John H.Price Sports and Recreation Centre.

Favourite book of all-time?
“Freakonomics” by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. A close second is “Let My People Go Surfing” by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia.

Favourite group or singer?
I am always listening to music. The Arkells are one of my favourite bands. A great group of artists that are very down to earth. I have watched them three or four times live now and they really know how to get the crowd into it. The first time I watched them in Halifax was the most fun! We were down at the Sea Horse tavern – about 100 people. It was a last minute show that sold out in about 10 minutes.

Favourite movie of all-time?
That’s tough. I don’t know if I have a favourite movie. I loved watching “The Rocket” (Maurice Richard) while growing up.

Favourite spot on campus?
John H. Price Sports Centre. Not every day you can step out of your office and be in such a unique environment. Having a Tim Horton’s 30-feet away from my office is also a bonus!

Favourite spot off-campus?
Growing up in the Townships I was fortunate to see all kinds of places. Although there are some great spots and I may be a bit biased (considering I grew up there), nothing beats the 10th hole at Dufferin Heights.

Favourite #Ubishops moment?
It’s hard to pinpoint one exact moment. The environment is so special.  I think the first time our Golf team qualified for Nationals in 2017 was very special. We got to play with the top 20 schools in the country out in Chilliwack, BC that spring. Another moment that sits close to my heart is hearing all of the stories from alumni, faculty, staff and community members about my late Grandfather, Garth Smith and Bruce Coulter. It goes to show how tight-knit this community really is.

Describe #Ubishops in three words.
Community. Engagement. Opportunity.

If you had to switch jobs with someone on campus, what would it be and why?
I would love to teach!

If you had to join a club or student group on campus, what would it be and why?
With the number of ski mountains we have access to, the BU Snow Club looks like a lot of fun. Toast Radio is a close second!

If you had to go back to school, which program would you pick and why?
It’s tough to say considering I thoroughly enjoyed my programs while at University. If I had to choose one, I would say Architecture.
